OK enough of the crappy stock stereo, let's get to work. I had all my stereo equipment ready to go in, and immediately after buying it I started working on the stereo. The goal was great sound quality and the ability to get somewhat loud but not add too much weight to the car, and to keep the spare tire.

Stereo equipment list:

I started by cutting the stock speaker locations to fit the 6 inch speakers. I used a saw and a rotary file.

Then I did the wiring, there was a lot to do.

Then I started on the speaker box. You can see my helper. I've always made them from MDF but I thought I'd try something different. I used furniture grade plywood for this box. It's much lighter than MDF. Unfortunately even with all the bracing the box vibrates, I would go with MDF if I was going to do it again. The box is very strong and stiff, but the wood just doesn't have enough density. When I turn up the bass the box visibly moves. It still sounds very good though, so I'm just going to leave it for now.

Box dimensions are - 32x13.5x14.5

I wanted something similar to the stock foam speaker baffles to help seal the speaker. I found some foam at Home Depot that was for shelves.

Finishing the box. I used hinges to mount it to the car, that way it will lift up so the spare tire can be removed. Also with 8 large screws holding it down it is safe against theft.

I had to cut off the stud that holds the spare tire down in order to be able to remove the tire.

I got the carpet from Parts Express. I used 3M adhesive to put it on. It ended up looking pretty good, you can hardly see the seams.

Finished box. I used some special screws on the speakers and grills to help with theft prevention.

Here you can see how it hinges up so the spare will come out. I made a hanger from a coat hanger to hold the box up. I also installed a small red light to light up the trunk.

The amps are mounted on the back of the speaker box, and the crossover for the components is mounted on the back of the seat.

I put the tweeters here, there was really no other place to put them and the stock locations are terrible.

Mounting the mids, I had to trim the inside of the plastic kick panel so it would clear the speaker.
