This is my turbo installation page for my 1995 BWM M3, it had just under 160,000 miles on it. I finished it right around Thanksgiving 2007.

This is my Southbend FE clutch, full feramic face on both sides. I put this in a few weeks before I started the turbo installation.

Pretty much everything, my own personal kit. I put a list of the parts at the bottom of this page.

015.jpg014.jpg016.jpg017.jpg018.jpg
Time for the clutch to go in. The old one was just about gone, you can see it's starting to wear on the rivet.

019.jpg020.jpg
Time to go up in the air for the turbo.

023.jpg024.jpg025.jpg026.jpg027.jpg028.jpg
I started tearing the motor apart, first thing to do was fix my perfectly fine oil pump nut and put in the new motor mounts. The oil pan looks nice and clean. The oil pump nuts have been known to come loose but mine was fine, I put some Loctite and wired it so it won't ever come off.

029.jpg
Then I pulled the head off, I had just put a new head gasket 10k miles previously so it's still looking good. I did some light sanding with a machined block and checked flatness, it was within .0015!

030.jpg031.jpg032.jpg033.jpg034.jpg035.jpg
All the cylinders look good.

036.jpg037.jpg038.jpg039.jpg
Time to stick the head on. I used a .140 head gasket to lower compression, and ARP studs to hold it down well. I bolted on the SPA turbo exhaust manifold before putting the head on. I had a bad torque wrench when I torqued the nuts down, so the actual torque was too low. I found this out when I went to retorque them after a few hundred miles. I bought a new torque wrench and torqued them to about 60 lbs.

040.jpg041.jpg042.jpg043.jpg044.jpg
Fuel time. I used a Weapon R fuel block off and added a Turbosmart fuel pressure regulator, and Racetronix 55# flow matched injectors. I also installed a Walbro 255 fuel pump. I drilled and tapped the intake manifold for some fittings for the boost gauge, boost control, and bypass valve.

045.jpg
I tapped the Vanos bolt for the turbo oil supply.

046.jpg
Some slight shroud modification so the charge pipe will fit.

047.jpg048.jpg
Head is back on, fuel regulator is bolted on. I used new fuel line and clamps.

049.jpg050.jpg051.jpg

Then I bolted on the turbo, it's a Garrett T04E 60 trim with a .63 t3 exhaust side.

052.jpg053.jpg054.jpg
I wanted a stock look so I painted the front of the intercooler. I had the bypass valve welded on the side.

055.jpg060.jpg061.jpg
I made a custom fitting to let the bypass valve air back into the intake. The charge pipe has 2 brass fittings for the wastegate and boost controller.

056.jpg057.jpg058.jpg059.jpg073.jpg
Some pictures of the charge pipe routing and oil catch can. I had a .750 aluminum pipe welded on for the idle control valve.

062.jpg063.jpg
I ran some wire to extend the mass air meter and connected it to the new meter with some bullet wire connectors.

064.jpg074.jpg
My gauges and boost control. Unfortunately the fuel pressure gauge doesn't work, I may get an air/fuel ratio gauge instead.

065.jpg
I bought a used chip, it runs great but seems to be too rich, I will probably just get an AFC Neo to lean it out.

066.jpg
Finally started! I was a little concerned at first because it filled the garage with smoke and looked like this. It wasn't running well and I figured out that the mass air meter was backwards so the screen wasn't straightening out the airflow. After turning it around it ran great.

072.jpg
I'm draining the turbo to the oil pan, so far I haven't had any trouble with it.

067.jpg068.jpg069.jpg070.jpg071.jpg
Still dirty, some almost finalized pictures. Car looks stock except for gauges.

077.jpg076.jpg
A little cleaner now.

078.jpg
Installing an Apexi AFC Neo.

One of my first runs, no exhaust yet. I burned up some of the insulation underneath my car but it was worth it!

And after finishing the exhaust.

First time at the track, too cold for any traction. I only got a couple runs in before I had an overboost problem, I forgot to tighten one of the fittings on the wastegate. I went back in the daytime a week later and ran a best of 12.67 at 111.7 mph.

New exhaust.
