Now it's time to do the end of the transmission. Here's what we are starting with.
First insert one of the two steel balls into the hole in the shaft. Next slide the bushing over the shaft and make sure it engages with the steel ball. If you are disassembling the transmission, you will need a magnet to get the steel ball out.
Next put the small 5th gear in, and the bushing on top of it. Then put the large 5th gear in, and the bearing and the blocker ring. Make sure you put in the fiber lined blocker ring.
This part is tricky. You have to put the synchro assembly in with the shift fork around it. It is very hard to get the blocker ring on the bottom to line up with the 3 keys. Plus at the same time the shift fork rod has to line up with the hole, and the shifter has to go into the shift fork. Just be patient and give it a few tries. This is the way I did it, but you might be able to take the shift fork rod out - it may make it easier.
When it's all in, there is a special bolt that holds the shift fork rod in. This bolt is not replaceble with a regular type of bolt. It doesn't require any sealant.
Now slide the 2 keys into the groove. If you got the blocker lined up properly they should slide right in. Next put the cover on over the keys. This keeps them in place. Now slide the 2 bearings onto the shaft, and put the last blocker ring on. This is the reverse blocker, and it is the only all brass blocker.
Now put the small reverse gear in, and the large reverse gear, bearing, and locking nut. You will have to tap the bearing on with a hammer and a rod or something. Only tap it in the center. When you are disassembling, use an air hammer on the back side of the gear and it will hammer the bearing off. Unfortunately the new locking nut I got was too big, I just reused the old one and tapped it into the threads in a couple places. I highly recommend you use a new nut. You may be able to get one from Ford, Southern Gear said they didn't carry it. Make sure the nut is tight, you will need a very large wrench.
Next install the brass plated washer and 2 bearings onto the reverse gear shaft.
Install the main reverse gear, the other brass washer, and the snap ring.
Now put the thick washer over the small reverse gear, the bearing, and the locking nut. Smash the nut where the groove is. Install the second steel ball, and put the speedometer gear over it. Then put the snap ring on.
Insert this oil catcher thingy, it's held on with 1 bolt. Put black silicone around the head of this bolt. Now put the end cover on, seal it with black silicone.
Tap the roll pin into the shifter rod. You can tap it in or use a C clamp. When you are removing it to disassemble the transmission, you will need a pin or bolt or something that is a little smaller than the roll pin - use it to tap the pin out.
Install the speedometer gear.
Pour a quart of transmission fluid over the gears, don't forget the 5th and reverse gears. Fluid type is up for debate, I used B&M Synthetic Trick Shift. You can also pour in a few ounces of friction modifier, some people use it and some don't. I recommend LubeGard black friction modifier.
Install the main cover, make sure the shift forks line up. Put everything in neutral position and it should go right on.
And that's about it. Tighten the cover, and I would wait until the trans is in the car to pour the rest of the fluid in. It goes in where the shifter is, wait till the driveshaft is in. Take out the Fill plug and pour the fluid in until it starts coming out (a little over 3 quarts).
